I have been having problems getting my weblog entries to this site. Wrote for an hour the other night, and the whole thing was eaten up by the Internet monsters. I'll keep trying, and figure this out!

All my best,

Ann

January 16
Just a quick note. I've been answering emails all day and finally have them pared down to less than 110. I'm going to try to answer all the usual questions, and discuss all the usual subjects here in my weblog from now on.

I read my Guest Book faithfully every day--so I do get your messages and comments, and I really appreciate them! Please remember that your comments there can be read by everyone, however. If you have something really personal, please send it to AnnieR37@aol.com. And please don't put your street address or your phone number in the Guest Book; this is for YOUR protection.

Under the new set-up, I can't respond to specific people who post in my Guest Book because I don't know what your screen name or location is.

Generally, I'm still getting a lot of requests to write about Laci and Scott Peterson, and I'm not going to do that. The case has been saturated in the media and there would be nothing more for me to add--unless someone personally involved wanted to open up doors that have never been opened before.

Cases I will definitely not be covering are: the Vancouver, British Columbia, pig farmer murders. After writing Green River, Running Red, I don't think I can bear to write another serial murder case for a very long time. It is just too emotionally draining.

I won't be writing books about older cases already covered by other authors, either: JonBenet Ramsey, Darcie Routier, Susan Smith, for instance. I AM writing about Dr. Bart Corbin in Atlanta, and the strange deaths of Jennifer Corbin and Dolly Hearn. And I'm also writing a book about Roland Pitre, convicted of many crimes in the Northwest.

Lately, I've had a number of requests from high school and college students who have papers to write or talks to present. They ask me to do their research for them. I had to give up helping on school projects more than ten years ago. Just not enough hours in the day!

And I also hear from dozens of people who want me to research unsolved murders for them, or to write books about unsolved cases. That is way outside my areas of expertise, and I will have to refer you to Jessica Fletcher of "Murder She Wrote!"

I'll add to the weblog tomorrow, and I am trying to find time to write a new newsletter. I have received hundreds of addresses from you for the mailed-out newsletter, and they have been added to the 35,000 names already on the list. I'm sorry that it's taken me so long to come out with a new newsletter!

Have a happy three-day weekend! And please remember why this day--January 16th--is special.

P.S.
Oh, oh. I just read my last blog entry. I didn't mean to say that brain surgeons operate by "trial and error!" I meant to say that writers have to learn by their mistakes as they go along. So, if any brain surgeons are out there, please forgive me! :*) I should have added that it also takes education for both surgeons and authors to learn their jobs!

Janurary 10th

It's the end of a long day here in Seattle. I had to get up wayyy early for me and go downtown to do a radio show and a television interview. I look SOOO much better on radio! Nobody over forty should ever have to watch themselves on television because you see angles you'd just as soon not know about.

Technically, I'm on vacation, but I'm doing some writing every day to prepare for the two new books. I'm trying to keep up with email, too, although I never seem to really get ahead of it. If I don't answer right away, please understand that it's almost impossible to do that.

Some questions came up today. One I hear alot. "What does (sic) mean, and what dothe little asterisk (*) following a name mean?" (sic) means that I am quoting someone exactly--even if the spelling and grammar are incorrect. I know better, but I'm being accurate.
The asterisk means I've changed the name for a couple of reasons: (1) using the real name would embarrass an innocent person. (2) It is the name of a victim of a sex crime or a child, or (3) the convicted person has been released from prison and might object to being named because he or she "has paid his debt to society." The asterisk is to let you know this is not the true name of the person.

Another question is why Liysa Northon (Heart Full of Lies) only got 10 years in prison, and was allowed to take an Alford Plea. Liysa neither denied or admitted guilt in her husband, Chris's death. Prosecutors accepted this plea because they didn't know if the Judge would allow her diaries, journals, emails, screenplays, and what was on her computer--that she said had been stolen--into evidence. All of these sources were full of fingers pointing at her, but, without them, she might have been acquitted. With them in evidence, she probably would have been convicted and received 25 years to life. Prosecutors have to weigh all possibilities. She would like to have a new trial, which could be very dangerous for her if she were convicted.

I get a lot of emails and letters from people who want me to tell them how to be a true crime writer. I can't do that any more than a brain surgeon can tell someone how to remove a tumor. It takes years of trial and error to learn any craft of skill. And I can't stop writing to mentor someone who is just beginning. You have to be a "detective" yourself to write true crime and figure out the steps that work for you. And you really have to be a self-starter! Take writing classes in a college near you! Read all the books you can in the true-crime genre, and buy a great book with an insulting title: THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO GETTING PUBLISHED by Sherri Bykofsky, a literary agent in New York. And, by all means, attend a homicide trial! And take notes. You'll be headed in the right direction.

I'll try to answer more of these questions as the weeks go by.

Late night comment
Hi,

It's now about 12 hours after the message below, and I've been writing all day--since I couldn't get out because of the snow and ice. Fluffbutt, my 17-1/2 year old cat has been sleeping under my desk all this time, and Beanie, Bunnie and Toonces AND Willow and Lucy have been running in and out. Time to quit and enjoy Saturday Night Live and Mad TV, switching back and forth.

My next hardcover book will be on the cases of Jennifer Corbin and Dolly Hearn in Georgia, ones that many of you may have heard of. Tragic, tragic stories. There is a gag order out on this from the judge, but I won't be publishing any book until AFTER the trials, so any information that comes in to me won't be known to anyone but the critters listed above--and to me. As you know, I don't want to write anything before its time and interfere with the trials. I'll be heading for Georgia later in the year, of course.

Before the Georgia book, I'll be finishing the Roland Pitre cases in Washington for my next crime files: Worth More Dead. And even before that, I'm going to grab some vacation AND write a new newsletter, long overdue. If you aren't on my mailing list, please send your STREET addresses to www.annrules.com

I'm going to try and gradually answer your most frequent questions in this log, so watch this space.

Ann's New Weblog
January 8, 2005

To all my readers,

Some of you may have read my original entry in this new weblog. I started on January 1, 2005--only to be "hacked" a few days later, and all my messages deleted . But I'm back. It's a way to keep in touch almost daily, although I can't have two-way discussions or I'll never get this year's two new books written!

Meant to be in Portland today signing books at Fred Meyer, but snow and ice kept me off the road. Watch my itinerary on the Homepage for when we will be there. It will be soon, and I am sorry.

I do have news on which cases I'll be covering this year, and I'll let you know in a few days. Remember that you can post comments in my Guestbook. I read those every morning!

Happy New Year--once more!
